Signals (Catch and Release)

Signals (Catch and Release), 2017

Signals Catch and Release takes from the term used in recreational fishing to describe a method of capturing, assessing, and releasing fish back to the water. The works for this exhibition were made during my time as a Recycled Artist in Residence (RAIR) in 2017. Here I consider the cost of the human pursuit of comfort and control and the futility of recycling and other attempts to offset the ill effects of capitalism. The exhibition includes a barn raising quilt made from insulation, custom water filters, a monument made from a tire planter inspired by Philadelphia's role as the first municipal water provider, and a shredded corporate office desk stuffed with fossils and a sound system that plays weather music tuned to a frequency that a man named John Hutchinson claims to have used to clean the water after the BP oil spill.
